Many people have traveled far to be here, from countries around the world. We’ve lived amongst the treasures and mysteries of that far away place. Some of us have never traveled outside of Iowa. Wouldn’t it be amazing to bring those distant worlds to our doorstep here in Iowa, so that fellow Iowans could enjoy the warmth and depth of other countries and cultures, not to fear it but to relish it, understand it?!!

That doorstep is becoming a reality.

The World-An International Cultural Center in downtown Cedar Rapids will soon be a reality. You can help swing that door wide open. The World, an Iowa Corporation, has applied for 501(c) 3 status. We are dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds of residents of eastern Iowa. This will be done by sharing the art, literature, dance, music, history, customs, and cuisines of other countries/cultures.

The Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence is introducing a new program called Leadership Institute for Tomorrow (LIFT). LIFT’s mission is to support the hiring, promotion, advancement and leadership of women of color in administrative and management opportunities. ICADV is very excited about this new program and the potential it has for changing the face of leadership in our state. The LIFT program hopes to prepare candidates for success in a leadership/management role in a domestic violence program or other non-profit agency.

The 2007 LIFT class will begin in October of 2006 and end at graduation on September of 2007. An independent LIFT Advisory Committee will assist ICDV in selecting approximately 10 women of color based on a competitive application process. If you would like an application, have questions, and/or would like additional information about LIFT or need additional program materials please contact Joan or Adam at (515) 244-8028; email: joanK@icadv.org or adams@icadv.org.
